Television physicians are incredibly recognizable to the point of being cultural icons. For instance, can you name these shows?

The lead actor plays an antihero—an unusually brilliant, but ill-tempered doctor who faces off with both the hospital administration and with his patients (one real physician commented, “The way he treats sick people on the air sets doctor-patient relationships back a hundred years.”). The character has “excessive bad manners” and is “glum and sometimes even nasty.” He’s further described as “surly, snarling, growling, blunt and self-assured.”

When it launched, this show was heralded as a groundbreaking portrayal of medicine because of its “unparalleled realism and honesty,” and a “no-compromise-with-truth” attitude in its portrayals hospital life. Many scenes were shot in actual hospitals, and on occasion the show used real footage of medical procedures.
